4. Finally Tackle Clutter That Accumulates in Each Room

Now, here’s where organizing can get a bit tricky…when your kids, or your husband, or—let’s face it, you—leave stuff lying around in EVERY room of the house.
Even now I see my husband’s watch on the side table, and my daughter’s favorite book on the couch. And, yep, that’s my Patagonia and my running shoes lying on the floor next to the loveseat.
The best solution to this type of clutter is to, of course, pick it all up and put everything back where it belongs RIGHT NOW.
But many of us don’t even have the luxury to spend the measly five minutes it takes to do just that. We have to get groceries or make dinner or pick up the kids from soccer practice…
So here’s what I do to organize this mess: I set up catch-alls for each person for every room (or adjorning rooms) that blend in with the decor and hide the clutter. At the end of the day or during a commercial break everyone locates their items and puts them in their catch-all.
Then, each week everyone sorts through the items in each of their catch-alls and puts everything away in it’s proper place.
What I love about this organization strategy is that it WORKS—it works with the habits of your not-so-neat-freak family members and with your busy lifestyles while also keeping your home feeling less stressful and cluttered.
So whether you set up catch-alls in the living room using canvas bins, or you decide to set up buckets on or baskets on the stairs or just hang up mini tins in the hallway—this is a great strategy to teach your family to not leave items lying around on counters or on tables.
