Trying to lose weight? The keto diet is a great way to help you lose that weight in a way that doesn’t feel like you’re starving yourself.

And losing weight isn’t the only benefit of going keto.

Although it seems like a fad, the ketogenic diet is nothing new—it’s actually been used for some time in treating epilepsy in children.

And many report better mental clarity, more energy, and less acne breakouts while following a keto diet.

The downside?

Well, you have to stick to it to make it work. Keto is a high fat low carb diet, and it works by transforming the way your body uses fat.

Currently your body fuels itself (mostly) on carbohydrates. When you take carbs out of the equation, your body starts to go into a state of ketosis. This means it’s producing more ketones into your stream as your body starts to learn to use fat—instead of carbs—for energy.

So to get your body into ketosis, you’ll want 60-75% of your daily calories to come from fat, 15-30% to come from protein, and 5-10% to come from carbohydrates.
